What is a preferred provider organization (PPO)?

A PPO is a type of health plan that allows members to see providers in and out of the network. You pay lower costs when you see network providers. But you can go outside the network and pay more for your services.

You can explore online to see if a provider is listed. Even if you see the provider listed on line, double check to see whether that provider is in your specific network.
  • Call the provider’s office and give them your policy id number listed on your card and have them verify their status – whether they are participating in-network or out-of-network, etc.
NOTE: Regardless of the plan you have, it’s good practice to double check with the provider’s office directly by giving them your policy id number listed on your card to verify how their services might covered under your plan.
